Aquilaria sinensis Planting Project (Lantau Island)

The project is divided into three phases, each expected to last three years. The ‘China Medicine and Culture Research Center’ under the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will oversee the project’s sustainable development. Partnering organizations and local groups include the Shap Long Village Office, Innovative Technology Agriculture Farmers, and the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Pharmacists Association. The project has received support from several Lantau Island community and village representatives, including the Lantau South Rural Committee, Tai O Rural Committee, Shui Kau Village, and Shap Long Village representatives.

Phase 1: Reclamation and Conservation

Form a project execution team to handle the infrastructure development, vegetation maintenance, and relevant permit applications for establishing an agarwood conservation base. The project will be implemented in phases, with the goal of planting 300 Aquilaria sinensis.

Phase 2: Cultural Promotion and Heritage Preservation

Establish a research and education center focused on agarwood, creating a model for the artificial cultivation of local agarwood, conserving endangered plants, and providing Hong Kong citizens with insights into the natural and cultural conservation of agarwood. This initiative aims to revitalize Lantau Island’s rural areas, promote local eco-tourism, and create related job opportunities.

Phase 3: Utilization and Sustainable Development

Restore high-quality agarwood products in Hong Kong and develop them into high-value agricultural projects. The proceeds will support the research and education center, ensuring the sustainable development of agarwood’s natural and cultural conservation efforts.
